I’ve spent my entire adult life working in the financial markets. And even with all that experience, these meltdowns are still emotionally difficult for me to navigate.<\/p>\n

If it’s still tough for me after 31 years, I can’t imagine what it’s like for you.<\/p>\n

Here I am asking you to sit still through the biggest meltdown in stock prices<\/a> we’ve seen since the 2008 Great Financial Crisis. That’s got to be hard advice to hear… and even harder to take.<\/p>\n

I know frustrations are rising when I receive emails from readers angry with me for counseling subscribers to cancel their travel plans.<\/p>\n

One reader accused me of putting him out of his job as an airline pilot. Clearly, it’s not rational… But it shows how frustrated and angry people are right now.<\/p>\n

I get it.<\/p>\n

Usually in a crisis, it’s clear who’s to blame. In 2008, it was the big banks. In 2000, it was the internet companies and crooked accountants.<\/p>\n

But whom do we blame in 2020? The coronavirus?<\/p>\n

This is the very definition of a Black Swan event – something completely beyond our control or ability to forecast.<\/p>\n

But I want you to remember as far as Black Swan events go, we do have data on how long viral outbreaks last.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

According to the CDC, flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May.<\/p>\n

As I wrote last week<\/strong><\/a>, once we have an approximate date for a vaccine… the market will bottom and stocks will soar higher. To that end, you should know the first coronavirus vaccine human trials started on Monday.<\/p>\n

It’s expected we’ll see a vaccine within 12–18 months. My bet is unlimited resources will be thrown at efforts to significantly shorten that time frame.<\/p>\n

But between now and a firm vaccine date, I want you to expect more volatility.<\/p>\n

The market will fluctuate between panic selloffs and panic rallies on an almost daily basis. The markets could end up down as much as 40–50% from the peak. I need you to emotionally prepare yourself for that.<\/p>\n

The only other course of action I see that will blunt the market sell-off is if the U.S. embraces a China-type nationwide shutdown. Under that scenario, we could see the market recover virtually overnight.<\/p>\n

I don’t know if the political will exists for that type of bold action.<\/p>\n

President Trump would likely have to declare martial law. Loan payments, rents, mortgage payments, and utility payments would all have to be suspended for 30-90 days. Virtually every family would require financial assistance.<\/p>\n

The Fed would have to provide unlimited lines of credit to banks, brokers, airlines, hospitality chains, utilities, etc. It would be a massive undertaking.<\/p>\n

But if we look at China, we can see its draconian quarantine appears to be paying off.<\/p>\n

If published reports are to be believed, industrial production is coming back online… restaurants are opening… and domestic travel has started up again.<\/p>\n

Maybe that is all Chinese propaganda as some are saying. Sitting at my desk in sunny Puerto Rico, it’s easy to be an armchair general. And so, I realize there are no easy answers.<\/p>\n

So, I’ll focus on what I do <\/em>know for sure: We will overcome this viral outbreak… The U.S. economy will recover… And stock prices will fully recover.<\/p>\n

How we get there remains up for debate. But there’s no question we’ll overcome our present circumstances.<\/p>\n

The sun will shine again on America and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

Remember, the world overcame World War I… the 1918 Spanish Flu… World War II… and the Great Depression. Just like those past generations, we’ll triumph over this generation’s trials.<\/p>\n

In the interim, my team and I will continue to be here with you and for you.<\/p>\n
