The stock market rally this year has been no coincidence.<\/p>\n

It’s the result of a four-year cycle that has rung true 72 years in a row.<\/p>\n

Yet, few are aware it even exists.<\/p>\n

Right now, we’re in the third year of this cycle.<\/p>\n

And based on the past, stocks tend to perform quite well during this time. Most investors are likely sitting on big gains right now.<\/p>\n

That’s because the third year of this cycle has produced positive returns 78% of the time since 1928. And, the average return for the year was 13.5% versus a 7.7% return on average for all years.<\/p>\n

So far in 2023, the S&P 500 is already up 15%. So, the market is certainly on schedule. But, that might be a problem this summer.<\/p>\n

You see, while the annual bullishness of the third year in this cycle is a widely followed phenomenon, there is a “cycle within the cycle” that is quite bearish and likely to cause some trouble this summer.<\/p>\n

July and August tend to be poor months for the stock market during the third year.<\/p>\n

For example, in 2019 the S&P 500 was trading near 3000 just before Independence Day. By mid-August, the index was at 2840. That’s a 5% drop in about five weeks.<\/p>\n

In 2015, the S&P 500 dropped almost 10% between early July and late August.<\/p>\n

In 2011, the index lost 17%.<\/p>\n

And in 2007, the S&P 500 dropped 9% in four weeks as this “cycle within a cycle” played out.<\/p>\n
